History of The Midtown Restaurant
The 1924 fire changed the landscape that was downtown New London forever. In fact the empty lot created here stood vacant until it was purchased in 1938 by a Mr. Knorr, who built a restaurant he called "Midtown" due to its central location. There he served a simple menu of beverages and sandwiches until a well known boxer in the Midwest Semi-Pro circuit, Ted Algiers bought it. Ted kept the Midtown name but expanded the menu to include dinners and a highly popular Friday Night Fish Fry. Customers enjoyed the food and conversations, stopping by to talk about regional matches and other area activities. He sold the business to Wilma & Arnie Kohl from Hortonville who also kept the Midtown "title". They added to the composition by converting the upstairs apartment into a banquet and meeting room and adding steaks and seafood to the menu. Wilma's son, Don Schindel, joined the family business after Arnie passed away and they ran the bar and restaurant until 1978 when they sold it to Don & Mary Sommer. For the next 29 years Don and Mary continued the Midtown tradition of fine food, good friends and good spirits until the fall of 2006 when they chose to retire and sell it to it's present proprietor Tom Lebeau. Traditions continue as does the additions to the tapestry that is New London's Midtown Restaurant.
